How to run Newtin Web Applications on your computer
.NET Framework
Newtin applications require the Microsoft .NET framework v1.1 or later be installed and configured on the computer. To determine if .NET 1,1 framework is already installed and how to get it, visit Microsoft's website Get the .NET Framework 1.1. An alternate way of knowing if this framework is installed is if there is a "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322" or "C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727" directory on your local computer (for version 1.1 or 2.0 respectively).
Download and installation of of .NET 1.1 OR 2.0 framework is only necessary if neither one of them is already installed. The following are links to download the redistributable (full) installation file for each from Microsoft's web site. If neither one is installed, download and install either of the following:
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Redistributable (23.1 MB)
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Redistributable (22.4 MB)
Setup
Once the .NET Framework is installed and/or verified, the necessary security settings must be configured to allow the Newtin Web applications to run from Internet Explorer links on the Blue Stakes web page. Alternatiovely, the Newtin applications can be downloaded to the local computer and ran locally without adjusting any Internet Explorer or .NET security settings in most cases.
Instructions for both options are listed below [1] Run Directly from Blue Stakes Web Page or [2] Download and Run from Local Computer
Note: Some settings and configuration changes and installations require administrative rights. Windows Vista also runs most processes without administrative priveledges. In order to follow all steps below an Administrator account most likely will need to be used. In Windows Vista, the "Run as Administrator" option might also need to be used by right-clicking the application to run and choosing this option, even if the account has administrative rights.
Daylight Savings Time: Some applications are very dependent on proper time and therefore check to ensure proper settings and configuration of the daylight savings settings and certain patches that have been released by Microsoft. If you are unable to update these configurations and install the corresponding patches automatically through Microsoft Update, please download the following compressed folder (.zip file) and follow the instructions in the ReadMe.txt file: Daylight Saving Time Update
Option [1] Run Directly from Blue Stakes Web Page:
In order to run the applications directly from the web page, Blue Stakes web site must be set as a trusted site in Internet Explorer (step A) and .NET Security Settings must be configured (step B). You must follow both steps A and B below in order for Newtin to run.
Step A: Newtin Internet Explorer Setup
Newtin, run through Internet Explorer, requires communication with the server on port 80 (HTTP). By default, Internet Explorer will sandbox all applications and limit their functionality. To allow the Newtin applications to run, you must setup Internet Explorer to trust the host web site. To do this, follow these steps.
- Open Internet Explorer
- Select "Internet Options" from the Tools menu.
- Click the "Security" tab.
- Click the "Trusted sites" Icon.
- Find in the lower portion of the dialog the area for "Security level for this zone".
- Verify that the level is set to "Low" ("Medium" or lower for Vista). If necessary, click the 'Custom Level' button and at the bottom of the dialog displayed, select "Low" ("Medium" or lower for Vista) and click the "Reset" button.
- Vista Only: Uncheck the "Enable Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer)" checkbox.
- Click the "Sites" button to open the trusted sites list.
- If checked, uncheck the "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" option.
- In the "Add this Web site to this zone:" field, enter the host server: *.bluestakes.org
Click the "Add" button to add the site to the Web sites list.
- Click OK to dismiss the Trusted Sites window.
- Click OK to dismiss the Internet Options window.
Step B: .NET Security Settings Setup
You now must adjust the .NET Security settings for your computer. You may need administrative rights to perform this task depending on you network and operating system. If version 1.1 is installed (even if 2.0 and/or 3.0 are installed as well), the version 1.1 steps will work. If version 1.1 is not installed, but version 2.0 is, follow the version 2.0 steps below.
Microsoft .NET framework version 1.1
- Click on the "Start" menu.
- Click on the "Control Panel" shortcut.
- If in Category View double-click the "Performance and Maintenance" shortcut. In Vista click "System and Maintenance".
- Double click the "Administrative Tools" shortcut.
- Double click the "Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1 Wizard" Icon.
If this icon is not present, you can check one of the following directories for the shortcut:
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\ConfigWizards.exe or
C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\ConfigWizards.exe.
If this file is not found, the full .NET Framework version 1.1 is not installed.
- Click the "Adjust .NET Security" icon.
- By default "Make changes to this computer" is checked, leave it this way.
- Click the "Next" button to continue.
- Click the "Trusted Sites" icon so it is highlighted.
- Move the slider to the top towards the label "Full Trust". In Vista, if the Configuration Wizard is not Ran as Administrator, the slider might not allow it to be set to Full Trust.
- Click the "Next" button to continue.
- Verify the settings summary and click the "Finish" button to finish.
- Close the Adjust .NET Security program by clicking the red "X" in the top right corner.
Microsoft .NET framework version 2.0
- Download the following batch file from our server and save it to the local computer: "BluestakesDotNET.bat"
- Double-click the downloaded batch file to run it and adjust the security settings. In Vista, right-click the batch file and choose "Run as administrator", click "Continue" at the confirmation prompt, then type "yes" to alter the security settings.
- Verify that it displays some text similar to the following: "Added union code group with "-url" membership condition to the Machine level. Success"
- Press any key to continue as indicated which will close down the command propt window.
Option [2] Download and Run from Local Computer:
All Newtin Executable applications can be download to the local computer and then ran directly. With this method there are no changes required to Internet Explorer or the default .NET security settings. The only difference is that the username and password will be prompted for when starting the program. Once downloaded and setup on your local computer, the Newtin applications will detect new versions and will update themselves automatically through the built-in Live Update process. The following steps must be followed for each of the Newtin programs that are wanted to be run from the local machine, like Ticket Entry and/or Ticket Search.
Downloading and running Newtin on the local machine
- Go to http://www.bluestakes.org and click on "Web Applications"
- Click on "New User Login" (http://newtin.bluestakes.org/newtinweb/login)
- Enter the user name and password that was created when signing up
- The Newtin Remote Access page will appear
- Right click on the link for the program to be downloaded. For example, if I Ticket Entry was the desired program, then right-click on the word Ticket Entry in the left column of links
- Choose "Save target as..."
- Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files"
- Click in the "Save As" field and add the file extension ".exe" to the file name
- Choose a location where the file is to be saved. It is highly recomended that a new folder is created on the system drive. This ensures that proper security is in place for this folder, since it was created by the user. For example, create a new folder called "Bluestakes" under the C:\ drive and place the downloaded file(s) inside this folder.
*Please do not save the downloaded file(s) to your Desktop or the My Documents folder because of special access and security settings that might be applied to these locations on your local computer. Although it is simple to place a shortcut to this file on your Desktop or wherever is needed.
- Double click the downloaded application file (.exe). The first time the program is run, it will prompt for the "Path to Application Server". Enter http://newtin.bluestakes.org/newtinweb and click "OK".
* Be very carefull to type or copy this exactly as it appears here, without any extra spaces or other characters.
- Next it will prompt for the "Port for application server". Leave the default of 80 and click "OK"
- It will then prompt for the user name and password. Once the proper credentials are entered, the Newtin application can be used.
